Board-certified in general surgery and fellowship-trained as a surgical oncologist, Dr. Adam Riker specializes in the surgical management of patients with breast cancer, sarcoma, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers such as Merkel cell, squamous and basal cell cancer. Dr. Riker brings over 25 years of experience and expertise, with a professional team that will provide the most comprehensive, highest quality, and compassionate care along the Florida Gulf Coast.
Dr. Riker completed his five-year residency training in general surgery at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, as well as a three-year surgical oncology clinical and research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Surgery Branch located in Bethesda, Maryland. This fellowship cemented his lifelong interest in the key role that the own immune system plays in preventing and fighting cancer.
During this time, Dr. Riker also served as a commissioned officer in the Public Health Service, with research projects focused upon the human immune system and the immunotherapy of cancer. He has actively participated in numerous cancer clinical trials examining optimal immunotherapy treatment options for cancer, presenting his clinical and translational research findings at numerous scientific meetings, both nationally and internationally. Dr. Riker was also part of several research teams involved with the earliest known immunotherapy clinical research trials for patients with melanoma and renal cell carcinoma.
Dr. Riker brings an impressive academic career with over 156 peer-reviewed articles on cancer research and treatment, as well as filling the role of sole editor for two educational textbooks. He recently published his third book, entitled “The Riker Regimen”, as a guide to optimal human nutrition, longevity and cancer-free living. He has held numerous physician leadership positions throughout his career, including section chief of surgical oncology, director of several cancer programs and, most recently, as a chairman of oncology.
Outside of work, Dr. Riker strives for healthy, stress-free living. He enjoys long weekend runs, quality time with his daughters and constantly tweaking his lifestyle and diet. Dr. Riker also likes to garden, fish, hunt and raise free range chickens. He often travels abroad to learn more about international models of delivering high-quality, cost-effective cancer care, in addition to incorporating many aspects of traditional and holistic Chinese medicine into his current practice.
